Homework #3; due: April 24

  1. A naive estimate of the ratio of the rotational constant Be to the vibrational constant we for a diatomic molecule is Be/we~(m/m)1/2, where m is the mass of the electron, and m is the reduced mass of the two atoms. Examine the tables of molecular constants (2-3 molecules would be enough!), and compare the experimental data with the result of the naive estimate. Explain the difference.

  2. Express the vibrational constants of a diatomic molecule we and wexe in terms of the parameters of the Morse potential, De and b, and the reduced mass m.

  3. Problem in preparation.
