Demonstration of optical phenomena using pendulum

Most of the pendulum demonstrations presented in this class, including light polarization evolution in a birefringent medium adiabatic vs. nonadiabatic processes, etc. polarization ellipse self-rotation were developed by Prof. Boris Ya. Zel'dovich, CREOL School of Optics, University of Central Florida, and some of them are described in:

M. J. Soileau, B. Ya. Zel'dovich. "Bi-frequency Pendulum on a Rotary
Platform as a Tool to Teach Optical Birefringence and Liquid Crystalline
Displays", International Conference on Education in Optics (July 9-10,
1995, San Diego, CA, USA), SPIE Proceedings, Vol. 2525.

The Self-Induced Transparency demonstartion with a pinball multi-pendulum  machine was invented by Erwin Hahn and is mentioned briefly e.g. in
M. Sargent III, M. O. Scully, and W. E. Lamb, Jr., Laser Physics. Addison Wesley, 1974.
